Mike Lowell will join Pawtucket this weekend on a minor league rehab assignment before rejoining the Red Sox early next week. The solid play of Jed Lowrie has allowed the Sox to take their time with Lowell, which is a very good thing. Hopefully he can get back rested and ready to smack a lot of Fenway wall balls.
Meanwhile, Josh Beckett threw a bullpen session this morning, and all signs are go on him. He should be able to take the ball Sunday in Tampa Bay. Daisuke Matsuzaka will not travel with the team, but hopes to make his scheduled start Tuesday against the Blue Jays.
Still no word on Jason Varitek, though the rest could be good for him come August and September. He’s still day-to-day, though Francona suggested he might be able to pinch-hit tonight.
Kevin Youkilis sat last night with a minor back issue, but he’s back in the lineup today.
You gotta wonder how the Sox are 15-8 with all these serious injuries. We are a deep team, and we’re proving it now. Just wait until we’re all healthy again.
