Buchholz to the DL; Van Every recalled
May 14, 2008 by redsoxtalk
And now the explanation for Clay Buchholz’s last start: he is dealing with a broken fingernail on the middle finger of his pitching hand. I can see how that might make throwing a curveball kinda difficult. The Red Sox don’t want him having any more unnecessary bad starts (plus they need to limit his innings, remember?), so they’ve put him on the 15-day DL today.
Jonathan Van Every, defensive journeyman with some pop in the making, will join the Sox, who have a depleted outfield corps; Coco Crisp has some sort of severe migraine/digestive problem, and J.D. Drew has a tender wrist from last night’s game.
Steve Krasner notes that Buchholz was scheduled to pitch on Sunday, but if Josh Beckett slides up to that start, it means that Bartolo Colon could be an option on Tuesday. Keep your eyes peeled for that one.
