The Pirates downed the Red Sox today, 3-2, when they came back and took it in the final frame off of reliver Richard Lentz. Jon Lester turned in a strong outing today, Turns out he is working in his changeup more this Spring, to see if it’s good enough to use regularly.

As is the custom, both Josh Beckett and Clay Buchholz dominated their more educated but less talented counterparts today. Buchholz only needed 6 pitches to get through his inning, and he struck out one of those guys.

Josh Reddick is a 22-year old outfielder out of Guyton, Georgia. He was taken in the 17th round of the 2006 draft out of Middle Georgia Junior College, where he hit .462 and posted a .760 slugging percentage, leading the state in hitting at that level that year.He attributes his success to his fastball hitting ability.

David Ortiz is back, slimmer and trimmer (see this photo),and his wrist is no longer clicking. Watch out, American League. I wouldn’t underestimate a guy who, even with some major physical ailments last season, would have hit 32 HR and 122 RBI had he reached his usual playing time (about 150 games).

Groundhog Day might have been a disappointment, but there are signs that baseball will soon be back. For the second straight year, pitcher Jon Lester has reported very early to Ft. Myers. Very different from some former players who you just never knew when they’d show up, eh? Just seeing this kid’s work ethic helps you understand one of the keys to his success (beyond his amazing physical ability to throw a baseball, of course).
