Beckett to miss Friday start, Kason Gabbard to take the ball

Josh Beckett (7-0) will miss tomorrow’s scheduled start due to the “avulsion” on his right middle finger. Let’s hope that this blister heals up well, and that he can get back on his Rodeo ointment treatment.

Terry Francona indicated that the spot start will come from someone at AAA Pawtucket. Kyle Snyder pitched two days ago and is unavailable for a start, and you don’t want Joel Pineiro to start if you can help it. So it looks to be Kason Gabbard, who pitched a few games for us last season as well. He’s a mature, very capable lefty, just not with great stuff. He’s currently doing very well at Pawtucket, sporting a 3-1 record and a 2.75 ERA in 8 starts. Not bad for a 29th round pick.

This is a great opportunity to get these young starters some more big league experience, while we are comfortably in first place. There’s enough pressure pitching up here as it is.
