30-14: Wakefield falters

Tim Wakefield (4-5) turned in his worst performance of the season, giving up six runs in five innings. He admitted after the game that he never had it in this one, and it showed, as the Red Sox lost, 6-2. He gave up home runs to Alex Rodriguez and Jason Giambi, and the Sox just couldn’t make up the ground against Chien-Ming Wang (3-3).

Not a whole lot to like about this one. Yankees hitters collected nine hits and five walks off Wakefield before the bullpen shut them down for the rest of the game. Manny Delcarmen, just called up from Pawtucket, pitched an inning of scoreless relief.

The lineup did a decent job of wearing out Wang, making him throw a lot of pitches, but struggled against the Yankee bullpen. Kevin Youkilis continued his hot streak, going 2-5 with two doubles.
