43-24: Dice-K shuts out Bonds, Giants

Daisuke Matsuzaka (8-5) turned in a great performance, dominating the Giants for seven innings. He allowed just three hits and three walks (one intentional) and struck out 8 en route to a 1-0 victory, lowering his ERA to 4.18. Hideki Okajima and Jonathan Papelbon finished out the shutout, with Paps getting his 16th save of the year.

Barry Bonds was walked intentionally once, but went 0-3 in his other at bats, including an embarrassing called third strike in the eighth against Okajima. He didn’t flinch, even though the pitch came right over the plate. Was he just totally fooled?

Manny Ramirez homered in the fourth inning off of Matt Cain (2-7) to provide the margin of victory, a long shot over the Monster. It was his ninth HR of the year, and maybe a sign that the power might be back in Ramirez’ swing. Cain was a hard luck loser, not for the first time this season.

The newly anointed top of the order, J.D. Drew and Dustin Pedroia, went 1-8 on the night, but they’re still doing better overall than the previous tag team up there.
