Buehrle deal seems less likely

WEEI 850 AM’s Big Show has reported that the possibility of the Red Sox acquiring Mark Buehrle is shrinking. “Baseball sources” say that Chicago GM Kenny Williams had Jon Lester or Clay Buchholz in mind, but the Red Sox were thinking more conservatively, probably someone like Devern Hansack or Kason Gabbard. The deal is still possible, but no longer likely.

FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal was on earlier, saying that Buehrle would likely be dealt soon, whether today, tomorrow, or by the weekend. The White Sox are not allowing the 72-hour window for negotiation because they don’t want to delay their season, but also because I think Buehrle is set on signing with St. Louis after the season. If that’s the case, only a stupid amount of money would be able to get him extended for 5 years, which would not be worth it.

Not that WEEI ever knows anything but I am very glad that the Red Sox are not Danny Ainge and have no plans to trade for a player that doesn’t want to be here.

In a surprise announcement, the White Sox are said to have extended Mark Buehrle’s contract and taken him off of the trade block. It’s rumored that he re-signed for four more years. End of debate.

It has also been suggested that the White Sox front office “planted” the story about the Red Sox being close to a trade in order to boost the market for him. That’s also called lying, and is pretty low.
