Schilling out for a stretch

The Red Sox have announced their post-All Star rotation through July 16th, and Curt Schilling‘s name is nowhere to be found. With a comfortable 12-game lead over Toronto and New York, it looks like they want to rest Schilling as much as possible so that he’ll be ready for the home stretch and the playoffs. His right shoulder tendinitis has kept him from pitching since a loss on June 18th.

This is an exciting opportunity for lefty Kason Gabbard, who has been making starts in Curt’s stead. He will continue to be evaluated to see whether he has a role in the future of the Red Sox rotation. Should he struggle (or be traded), either Devern Hansack or Jon Lester could get the call.

Jacoby Ellsbury was recently demoted back to AAA Pawtucket, and the indication is that a relief pitcher will take his place on the active roster as the Sox travel to Detroit to face baseball’s best offense tonight.
