Behind in the ninth, the Sox are 1-32

Most people have heard that the Red Sox are 1-32 when they enter the ninth inning trailing. Shocking. We’re terrible! Not clutch!

Not really. Baseball Prospectus says that in this situation, the team that is ahead after eight innings wins 94.7% of the time, or 31.25 times out of 33 games. So if we had won two of those games, we’d be slightly above average.

Just another case of people’s skewed perceptions and media hype. Yes, the Sox had their share of comeback victories in the past, but it might not be as many as you remember. In 2006, how many 9th inning comebacks do you think the Sox had, through July 16th? Three.
