Lester is back; Schilling sharp in rehab start

There are a couple of tidbits of news that should ensure that our dominant pitching continues as we start the stretch run of 2007.

The time has finally come, Red Sox Nation. Jon Lester has been recalled to the majors to take the ball tomorrow night against the Indians at Jacobs Field in Cleveland. This will be his first start with the parent club since last August, when he was diagnosed with small cell lymphoma. Treatment appears to have completely eliminated the cancer, and Lester made an amazing recovery, in time for Spring Training this year.

It is reported that Lester is slated to permanently take over as the fifth starter for Julian Tavarez, who will make the move back to the bullpen. Lester was probably ready for the bigs at the beginning of this year, but the Red Sox have made it a point not to rush him back after such a physical and mental ordeal.

Lester is currently 4-5 with a 3.89 ERA for the PawSox in 14 starts. He’s battled some inconsistency, as well as a forearm cramp a few weeks ago. He’s primed and ready for the big time.

In other news, Curt Schilling pitched three scoreless innings in his first rehab start for Pawtucket. He struck out six and reached 94 mph on the radar gun, and threw 32 of 40 pitches for strikes. That’s gotta make you feel good. He’s scheduled to pitch again on Thursday, then the Sox will figure out where to go from there.

My only question: what happens to Kason Gabbard now?

To make room for Lester on the roster, reliever Joel Pineiro has been designated for assignment. He and his one-year, $4 million contract will not be claimed by anyone, but the Sox may seek a trade. I don’t see too many teams inquiring about him, but maybe he could pitch in the NL for someone. I’d be happy if they could get anybody to take about $1 million of that salary, or they could cover almost everything and get a low-level prospect back.
