Trades: Don’t hold your breath over Hunter

Torii Hunter is a great centerfielder, and he’s having a tremendous year for the Minnesota Twins. Great timing, as this is his contract year. Only problem for the Twins is, this is also the year to re-sign Johan Santana. The consensus is that GM Terry Ryan will have to choose one or the other in order to maintain Minnesota’s frugal payroll. If that’s true, it’s a no-brainer who you keep and who you let walk.

Nabbing Hunter would certainly upgrade our offense, and Coco Crisp would suddenly become the best fourth outfielder in all of baseball. You could imagine a lineup in which he would bat fifth. That would free up J.D. Drew to lead off, followed by Dustin Pedroia. But honestly, I just don’t see him being tradeable.

The Twins are still in the hunt in the AL Central, at least for the wildcard spot, but they certainly won’t be if they trade Hunter mid-season. They have no reason to go with such a strategy unless they totally slide the next 8 days and fall 12 games back or something. And even then, they will ask for a significant prospect in return. I wouldn’t count on Hunter being made available until the off-season.

Coco has been huge for us. I see no reason to want him as a forth out fielder. I LOVE Torri Hunter and he is an amazing out fielder but I don’t see him coming here. He is injury prone

It’s not about wanting him as a fourth outfielder so much as wanting to upgrade our lineup, which has been weak at times, to say the least.

Regardless, I don’t think Hunter will be traded. I am just responding to some of the chatter out there on trade possibilities.
