Buchholz is a keeper

As if we didn’t know it already. But Clay Buchholz (1-0) was pretty darn good yesterday in his major league debut. The numbers might not be so gaudy: 6 IP, 8 hits, 4 runs (3 earned), 3 walks and 5 strikeouts, but he only faced the 1st place Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and was matched up against a legit Cy Young candidate in John Lackey (15-7).

Buchholz had trouble spotting his fastball early, but he was sporting a curve and changeup that were just excellent. Just ask Gary Matthews, Jr., who struck out on three straight changeups. Try to adjust to one of those after seeing some 95 mph heat. Buchholz showed the ability to throw those pitches for strikes in many different counts, and displayed a cool demeanor on the mound (of course, getting ahead 6-1 in the first inning helps).

I’m sold. Buchholz has a spot in my heart and should have a spot in the rotation in 2008.
