Mirabelli hits the DL

Doug Mirabelli has been placed on the 15-day DL after he strained his right calf running the bases in the first inning rally of the first game of yesterday’s doubleheader. That’s disappointing, because Mirabelli’s bat was actually kind of coming alive recently.

Veteran backstop Kevin Cash has been recalled from AAA Pawtucket to be the backup catcher. He’s shown some flashes with the bat while with the Blue Jays, and is known to be a pretty good defensive catcher. Cash is hitting just .176 with Pawtucket in 176 AB. He has caught knuckleballers Charlie Zink and John Barnes, but it remains to be seen how he fares with Tim Wakefield.

You daintily dance around the french canadian elephant in the room.

It seems like this team all of a sudden is showing capabilities of late game come backs. It’s so good to see. I give Drew some credit for coming alive.

Hey, I’m as glad as anyone about the offense producing again in the late innings, but I’m not quite ready to proclaim that we have our old Sox back.

Despite his less-than-stellar batting average, Drew hasn’t been THAT much worse than I was expecting. He had two really bad months which make his season disappointing, but he’s been good the other two. Hopefully the arrival of Kielty will allow Francona to sit him more against lefties and get more rest overall. I think that’s the key to milking the most out of Drew.
