Roster tweaks

The extra day from the rainout might help the Sox, who are ailing a bit of late. Dustin Pedroia (elbow) is still day-to-day, and Doug Mirabelli (calf) is working his way back on Sept 2. In order to accommodate some depth concerns, they’ve made a few minor moves:

Pitcher Jon Lester was sent down to AA Portland yesterday, and lefty reliever Javier Lopez was recalled to fortify the bullpen. Why not Pawtucket? The Sox want to keep him in his 5-day schedule, and pitching for Portland will allow him to do that. The timing of the move is a little curious to me, but it’s not a bad move, as Lester is still struggling to find some consistency in his starts. He’ll miss just one start and be back in September to rejoin the rotation. Look for Lopez to be used in key situations against the likes of Jim Thome in the Chicago series, and the onslaught of lefties waiting for us in the Bronx next week.

The Red Sox also signed shortstop Royce Clayton to a minor league contract. He will report to Pawtucket and provide injury insurance for the middle infield. Clayton is an average veteran, solid in the field and passable at the plate. Think Pokey Reese with less speed. Clayton was released by the Toronto Blue Jays on August 8 after hitting .254/.304/.344 in 189 AB this year.
