Red Sox claim Jay Marshall on waivers

The Red Sox claimed 24-year old left-handed reliever Jay Marshall off waivers yesterday from Oakland, who had claimed him in last year’s Rule 5 draft from the White Sox. He was added to Boston’s 40-man roster, and lefty Daniel Haigwood was DFA’d to make room.

Marshall is a tall (6′ 5″), lanky lefty who throws submarine-style. His father posts here that since changing arm slots to sidearm, he can throw in the mid-80s, and features a fastball, changeup and a slider that our very own Javier Lopez helped him with. In fact, he sounds a lot like Lopez, and could eventually be his (cheaper) replacement on this roster.

He pitched in 51 games for Oakland this season, posting a 1-2 record with a 6.42 ERA in 42 innings of work. That’s not so impressive, but the front office must have seen something about him to like. Before 2007, he had never played above high-A ball, but he has shown some very good control since his age 21 season, averaging just 1.72 BB/9 in 4 minor league seasons.
