Cash out, Brown in; Sox acquire OF Sean Danielson

29-year old catcher Kevin Cash has been non-tendered by the Boston Red Sox, and becomes a free agent. While defensively he is pretty good, it seems his career .167/.223/.265 line made him expendable. To tell you the truth, I had no idea it was that bad.

The Sox have placed 25-year old catcher Dusty Brown on the 40-man roster, and he is in line to be the backup catcher for 2008 unless the Sox get someone else. He is a player known for his defense and strong arm. In seven minor league seasons, Brown has a .257/.334/.381 line, so he is not exactly catcher-of-the-future material. Still, the right-handed hitter is showing improved plate discipline, and does possess some power when he makes contact.

The Red Sox also received 24-year old outfielder Sean Danielson from the Cardinals as the player in return for Joel Pineiro, who will signed an extension with the Cards earlier and may stick in their rotation in 2008. Danielson is a switch-hitting outfielder who is undersized at 5′ 8″ and 165 lbs, but he’s compiled a respectable .283/.368/.351 line in three minor league seasons. Looks like Dustin Pedroia has taught the Sox not to underestimate small guys. He is more of a singles hitter, and projects as an organizational player or possibly a fourth outfielder at best. He has good speed, fields all three outfield spots well and has a good arm. He played most of 2007 in double-A ball, and hit well there. He has been assigned to double-A Portland for the time being.
