Schilling could re-sign

One week after filing for free agency, after talking with several teams with interest, Curt Schilling now says that talks are progressing well with the Red Sox, and that if things continue, he could re-sign with Boston.

The purported deal would be incentive-laden and require Schilling to pass a physical. Personally, I think this is a good idea. My only concern with signing Schill to an extension was the contract value, and if he’s willing to take an incentivized deal, it’d be a shrewd move by Theo. I think this would be the best solution for both parties, if he could pitch his last year in Boston and retire here. Shonda Schilling seems to agree.

Why should we sign this guy? As promising as our rotation is, what if Daisuke Matsuzaka doesn’t break through like we expect? What if Jon Lester continues with an ERA in the high 4’s and Clay Buchholz is inconsistent? What if 41-year old Tim Wakefield breaks down long term? In a worst-case scenario, this is a good signing for the Sox.

BTW, if we do get Schilling, I’d like to see us try to move Julian Tavarez. That way we can get some innings for our triple-A pitchers, should the opportunity arise.
