Injury bug strikes Sox

Alex Cora has been placed on the 15-day DL today (retroactive to Thursday) with a sprained right elbow. He was scheduled to have an MRI on it today. Taking his place on the roster is 28-year old reserve Joe Thurston, who saw time with the club in Spring Training this year. Thurston, a utility player, is listed at 5-9 and 190 lbs and has logged time all over the infield and in the outfield in his professional career. He has been playing second base at Pawtucket, and was 11-43 (.257) in 11 games this season.

Outfielder Coco Crisp is unavailable for tonight’s game with soreness in his right leg. He attributes it to having to run out too many bunts in the Cleveland cold air. This could mark the beginning of the Jacoby Ellsbury era (we can only hope).

With Mike Lowell also on the DL, the Sox are beginning to become really thin on the bench, especially in their infield. Kevin Youkilis also fouled a ball off of his left foot hard today, and was visibly in pain during the game. Let’s hope that this is not serious, or we’re looking at an infield of Sean Casey and Jed Lowrie at the corners.
