Injury update: Okajima, Crisp

Hideki Okajima has a sore throwing wrist. John Farrell has noted that Okajima hasn’t been following through on his splitter recently, and as a result the pitch has lost some of its late sink. Hopefully this is not a major issue; the Sox plan to shut him down for a few days and see how he feels.

Coco Crisp left Tuesday’s game in Baltimore with dizziness and nausea. It appears that Crisp is suffering some form of mild vertigo, probably related to an inner-ear thing he had last season. He feels fine otherwise, but this is a rather debilitating problem; he’s on medication that should help, and hopes to be back by Monday.

To accommodate these changes, the Red Sox have made a roster move. They optioned Jonathan Van Every back to Pawtucket, and recalled 27-year old reliever Chris Smith, who was 1-2 with a 1.45 ERA there. Smith began in the rotation, but has pitched his last six games out of the bullpen, recording four saves and a 0.90 ERA.
