Dice-K to the DL, Jeff Bailey back with the team

Daisuke Matsuzaka was placed on the 15-day DL with a mildly strained rotator cuff. There doesn’t seem to be any structural damage, which means that he should be fine to go as soon as he is eligible. He will go on a shoulder-strengthening program, which hopefully will help his endurance. The emergence of Bartolo Colon allows Boston to be very cautious with its rotation, which will pay off in the long run.

With Kevin Youkilis still nursing a sore hand, the Red Sox have recalled 29-year old first baseman Jeff Bailey for the series in Baltimore. Bailey has been swinging a very hot bat at Pawtucket, hitting .339/.430/.798 for the month of May. He’s hit an incredible 13 HR this month alone.

Bailey has been up with the Sox in the past, going 1-9 and hitting a home run last season in three games. He is expected to go back to Triple-A when Justin Masterson comes up for his spot start on Tuesday at Fenway.

Clay Buchholz has been optioned to Pawtucket, apparently to focus on commanding his fastball. The brass is concerned that while his off-speed stuff has been phenomenal, it hasn’t been enough in starts where the fastball has not been consistent.
