Coco Crisp, Jon Lester and Sean Casey were given 7, 5 and 3 game suspensions for the brawl with the Rays last week.

Daisuke Matsuzaka is throwing aggressively and could rejoin the rotation next week. Curt Schilling also continues to make progress.

The importance of Justin Masterson goes beyond the games he pitches.

Dustin Pedroia has made some minor adjustments and is ready to start hitting once again.

I feel like this DL stint for Daisuke is very good for our team when it comes to the second half of the year. Assuming his injury is not serious, hopefully Matsuzaka will have more gusto late in the year and maybe his time off will mentally help him with his pitching approach.

I hope we always have a Masterson type player ready to be called up.

Also, it’s very cool to see that Buchholz is working primarily on his fastball command. We’ve seen what he can do when he has all of his pitches working.

I think the Red Sox have the right idea in this era of hard-throwing pitchers who throw all kinds of breaking stuff that was not thrown in the old days: Load up with the best front five you can, then have at least three young, nearly Major League-ready guys who can rotate in and spell your veterans. Keep drafting young arms to reload/trade, and you have a nice budget left to fill positional holes, even if you misfire sometimes.
