Sox ink first-rounder Kelly, second-rounder Gibson

This is a day of good news for the Red Sox. In addition to Papi’s good showing at Pawtucket, the Sox announced that they have signed 18-year old shortstop-pitcher Casey Kelly out of Sarasota, FL, their number one draft pick this season. He had signed a letter of intent to quarterback at the University of Tennessee, but the Sox “volunteered” enough dollars and opportunity to make this happen, as expected.

Kelly will join the Gulf Coast Rookie League team. As per his wishes, they will start by trying him out at shortstop, but he’s also seen as a pretty good pitching prospect as well, so we’ll see. It’s up to how well his bat plays.

The Sox also signed their second-rounder today, Derrik Gibson out of Delaware. He is another athletic, multi-talented player.
