Beckett scratched again, Dice-K takes the ball today

Oh no. Josh Beckett has been scratched from his start today, and will go see Dr. James “Tommy John” Andrews, the preeminent elbow specialist for pitchers. In his place, Daisuke Matsuzaka will start tonight against Javier Vazquez as the Sox open up against the Chicago White Sox. The last rotation spot will go to David Pauley for now.

Theo has said this is just “precautionary” (of course), but Sox fans, we need to prepare for the worst here. I don’t think this will keep us out of the playoffs, but our chances are significantly worse without Beckett out there twice per series. Without him, we’re looking at a three-deep rotation of Jon Lester, Matsuzaka and Tim Wakefield/Paul Byrd. That means our bullpen will have to be utilized a lot, which doesn’t bode well for us.
