2008 Offseason: Sox retain Wakefield

The Red Sox exercised their $4M team option on starter Tim Wakefield yesterday. After posting a 4.13 ERA and 10-11 record this year, it was expected. Wakefield is a league-average pitcher with experience, and his knuckleball confuses the heck out of many hitters. Seeing that floater coming at you after a 93 mph fastball the day before in a series is tough, and sets up most members of the bullpen to look like Nolan Ryan when they come out to pitch. Having someone else catch Wake also gives Jason Varitek the rest he needs to keep fresh over the long season as well.
