2009 Offseason: Sox trade Pauley for Bierd

Pitcher David Pauley, who is out of minor league options and was designated for assignment this week, has been traded to the Baltimore Orioles for right-handed reliever Randor Bierd. Pauley, who was acquired from the Padres’ system, was a nice depth guy for the rotation, but another guy that the Red Sox would not commit any real playing time to. Best of luck to you, David.
Bierd is a mildly interesting 25-year old groundball specialist out of the Dominican Republic, and is listed at 6-4, 190. He doesn’t throw hard, but his stuff is apparently very… unique. He’s posted very good strikeout rates up to the Double-A level, and turned in a 4.91 ERA in 36.2 IP with the Orioles last season. His K-rates didn’t translate last year because of hittability and erratic control, but there’s still some potential there.
