2009 Offseason: The Captain still in command

Jason Varitek has accepted Boston’s contract for one season at $5M, with a club option for $5M or $3M player option for 2010. There are $2M of additional incentive clauses for 2010.

The Sox still overpay, but not as much as they could have (recall that Boras was talking about Jorge Posada’s massive contract). This is a pretty good result all around: Boston has Tek to tutor their next young catcher for 2009, the young pitchers still get to keep their binky, and both Tek and the Sox save some face by him not going somewhere else to retire.

    So, who’s catching Wake?

We will have to see, but if I had to guess, I’d say Josh Bard. The Sox want catcher 2 to play more this season than just catching Wakefield. I think the job could also be open to Kottaras and Brown if they push their way into the picture.
