Six Sox named to 2009 AL All-Star team

The Red Sox are popular indeed, not just with fans, but players too. 2B Dustin Pedroia and LF Jason Bay have been named as starters for this year’s All-Star Game, to be held in St. Louis. Other Boston players who made the team include Tim Wakefield (his first selection in his illustrious career), Josh Beckett, Jonathan Papelbon and Kevin Youkilis. Congratulations to all these deserving guys.

You could make an argument that Jon Lester (7-6, 4.16 ERA) should be going on this trip as well, but a slow start prevented him from making the cut. Since his start on May 31, Lester has gone 4-1 with a 1.74 ERA, striking out 61 hitters over just 46.2 IP. He has held opponents to a .201 average over that span, and the Sox are 7-1 in those 8 starts. That’s some run. Anyone still want to argue that we should have traded him for Johan Santana?
