Masterson, Hagadone and Price swapped for V-Mart

Apparently, it’s a done deal. Justin Masterson, Nick Hagadone and Bryan Price will be joining the Cleveland organization, and the Red Sox will acquire 1B/C Victor Martinez. The 30-year old Martinez, a switch-hitter, brings a .284/.368/.464 line with him and the flexibility to play first base, DH and catch, which should ensure enough playing time for him. He also brings some postseason experience from 2007, which we know the Sox value.
Martinez boasts a .369 lifetime OBP and hits righties and lefties equally well, though he has slightly better power from the right side. It is expected that Martinez will fill the role previously held by Adam LaRoche, plus part-time catching duties, of course. I expect the lineup against RHP to feature V-Mart at first, Kevin Youkilis at third, and Jason Varitek catching; against LHP, we might expect to see Youkilis at first, Lowell at third, and Martinez catching. If it’s a tough lefty, Martinez can DH in place of David Ortiz. We have to keep George Kottaras around; he’s out of options and we need him for when Tim Wakefield returns to the rotation.
LaRoche, freshly acquired from Pittsburgh, is already on his way out of town, reportedly to the Braves. I feel kind of bad for the guy, but he does get to go back to Atlanta, where he had a pretty good start to his career.
I think this is a fair price to pay for Martinez, who has a reasonably-priced option for 2010. Masterson wasn’t going to make this rotation, Hagadone is a question mark with a lot of upside, and Price is a potential reliever. I am sad to see Masterson go, especially. He’s a really good kid who did whatever the organization told him they needed. The Indians will feature two of the best sinkers in baseball once he joins Fausto Carmona over there. Best of luck to you, Justin (except when you face us, of course).
