Sox add Byrd to the fold

The Red Sox signed 38-year old  pitcher Paul Byrd to a minor league contract yesterday. Byrd has not pitched at all since he became a free agent at the end of 2008. He will probably join Daisuke Matsuzaka in Florida, then pitch for Triple-A Pawtucket with an eye to a September callup.

Byrd will likely serve as a long man in the bullpen and as insurance against a Sox rotation nightmare. Currently, our 3-4-5 starters are struggling, and we have Matsuzaka and Tim Wakefield on the DL. Some see this as a desperation move, but I think it’s just long-term prudent planning. However, this move does signal that the Sox are concerned about the team’s pitching depth. Hard to imagine just weeks ago that we were talking about trading away multiple arms at the deadline.
