Hot Stove 2010: Okajima avoids arbitration

The Red Sox announced yesterday that they signed a one-year, $2.75M agreement with Hideki Okajima. Get used to these types of contracts, as Theo Epstein still hasn’t gone to arbitration with a single player in his tenure here. The contract contains bonuses of $50k for each five appearances over 50 games, up to a total of $300k in incentives. Okajima is a key setup man in our bullpen, and the only strong lefty reliever we currently have, so he is quite valuable to the Sox. Were he a free agent, he would likely command a salary of $4M or more. We have projected Okajima to pitch just over 60 innings this season and post an ERA of 3.54.
