Links 2-18-2010: Pitchers and catcher, Dice-K’s back, Lowell’s role and Buchholz’ weight

Pitchers and catchers reported today, meaning they’re starting workouts in preparation for Spring Training. Daisuke Matsuzaka may start camp a little later than the other pitchers due to a sore back from something he did at Athlete’s Performance Institute in Arizona, but Theo Epstein was quick to point out that this injury was “not serious“.
Mike Lowell got some attention for the seemingly reduced role he will play in 2010 if he remains with the Red Sox. He understands the situation, and I don’t expect it become a problem for a consummate professional like Lowell. The Sox plan to use him at first base to spell Kevin Youkilis, and potentially as a right-handed DH or pinch-hitter off the bench.
Clay Buchholz is psyched about gaining 10 pounds this offseason, and hopes it will help him with his stamina this year.
