Links 4-23-2010: Ellsbury’s ribs fractured, Dice-K pushes Wakefield out of rotation

News came yesterday that Jacoby Ellsbury actually suffered microfractures in his ribs, in four different places. No wonder the poor guy can’t breathe or run right. This is not like a knee issue; Ellsbury could resume baseball activities as soon as mid-week, depending on how he feels. But it’s a tough break for the Red Sox, who are also without Mike Cameron right now. Darnell McDonald has been hitting enough, but a lot of balls seem to be getting past him out there in center.

Daisuke Matsuzaka will rejoin the team next week, which will push Tim Wakefield into the bullpen as a mop-up/emergency starter (if you weren’t convinced of that before, Clay Buchholz should have convinced you with his 10 strikeout performance). Who gets dropped from the bullpen? RHP Scott Atchison, who still has minor league options, will almost certainly get shipped to Pawtucket. I like the guy a lot, he’s done pretty well thus far.

After a couple games with rousing late-inning heroics, the Red Sox lineup just faded into nothingness last night. Not too many hard-hit balls, and a couple of errors just for kicks. Why are we playing like the Kansas City Royals? Actually, those guys might get offended at the comparison. Get it together, guys!
